The government has appointed Anil Sinha as the new chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He has taken over from Ranjit Sinha who retired on 2nd DEC.
Mr Sinha was the Special Director, the second in command at the agency. His name was among the short-listed candidates chosen after a meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence today.
A collegium comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India HL Dattu and the leader of the largest Opposition party or Congress, met for the first time after the anti-corruption Lokpal law was enacted in December.Mallikarjun Kharge, who leads the Congress in the Lok Sabha, represented the Opposition. Shri Anil Kumar Sinha is an officer of Indian Police Service of 1979
batch of Bihar Cadre. He was serving as Special Director, CBI before
taking over as the Director, CBI.
He holds MA degree in Psychology and MPhil in Strategic Studies.
He has been recipient of several rewards including Gold Medal for
Bachelors Degree in Psychology Honours, Director’s Silver Medal at LBS
Academy of Administration, Mussorie. He is recipient of Police Medal for
Meritorious Services in the year 2000 and President’s Police Medal for
Distinguished Services in 2006.
He has received his education and training in several prestigious
Institutes of India and abroad including Patna University, JNU, West
Yorkshire Police Training School, Wakefield, W. Yorkshire, UK, National
Defence College, New Delhi (45 th Course in 2005), John F. Kennedy
School, Harvard University and Australia New Zealand School of
Government, Australia. From 1979 untill 1997 he served in Bihar and held several charges as
Supdt. of Police of important districts and later as Dy. inspr. Genl. of
Police in Special Branch. He served on central deputation from 1998 to
2005 in Special Protection Group (SPG) as DIG and thereafter as IG
engaged in the protection of the Prime Minister of India and other SPG
protectees.
Back to Bihar he served as Addl. DG, Law and Order where he is
credited with creating a specialized force called Special Auxiliary Police
(SAP) comprising of retired Army Personnel (JCOs). He also served as
Addl. DG and Head of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau.
On central deputation, he joined as Addl. Secretary in CVC in 2010
and continued till April, 2013 looking after the vigilance matters of Public
Sector Banks, Public Sector Enterprises, Ministries under the Govt. of
India and policy matters.
He joined CBI as Special Director in May, 2013 and was supervising
several zones of Anti Corruption, Economic Offences, Special Crimes, STF
and MDMA.
He has visited several countries as Security and Vigilance Expert
and has participated in benchmarking exercises concerning anti corruption
endeavors and was on the panel of country experts for UNCAC. He has
delivered talks in various seminars in prestigious Academies / Institutes.
