Suicide Bid won’t be a crime as Government decides to scrap Section 309 of Indian Penal Code, 1860
In a major decision taken by Modi Government, the Government of India has decided to away with law that imposes punishment on a person who attempts to commit suicide but on account of several factors i.e. lack of courage, second thought, saved by doctors etc. could not commit this crime in its entirety.
Government states that a person commits this act only when he or she is in a desperate condition. If such person succeeds in such Act he is gone forever from his life. But if due to inevitable circumstances he could manage to survive, he would be liable to face penal liability. Instead such person should be given psychological counseling
Now, if a person attempts to commit suicide and survives, he won’t be treated as a criminal.
Prior to this reform, a person charged with Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 was to face imprisonment for 1 year with fine.
