Justice Markandey Katju has been replaced as Chairman of Press Council of India by ex-Supreme Court Judge C K Prasad.
Justice C K Prasad is a retired judge of Supreme Court of India. He completed his four-year term in July this year. Among the significant judgments he passed before retirement were directing police and magistrates to desist from immediate arrests and detention under IPC’s section 498A ruling that the law protecting women was sometimes being used as a “weapon rather than a shield by disgruntled wives.” The SC bench including Prasad said that no person accused of an offence punishable with imprisonment up to seven years should be arrested by the police without proper investigation.
Justice Prasad is a Science Graduate from Magadh University. On November 1973 he was enrolled as an advocate and practice in civil Constitutional, Criminal and Service matters at Patna High Court. In 1989 he was designated as Senior Advocate.
He was appointed as the Additional Advocate General of the State Bihar on 14.12.1993, which office he held till his elevation. He held various offices including the office of the Vice-President of the English Speaking Union of Commonwealth.He took oath as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on March 20, 2009 and elevated as Judge, Supreme Court of India on February 8, 2010.
