A Delhi sessions court has awarded life imprisonment to main accused Sher Singh Rana for the murder of bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi in 2001.The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Rana.
Rana, 35, had been convicted under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC for murdering Phoolan at her residence here on July 25, 2001.
Additional sessions judge Bharat Parashar ruled that it is not a case which falls in the category of the “rarest of rare”.The judge further said that life imprisonment shall serve the interest of justice. Phoolan Devi, who was Samajwadi Party (SP) Member of Lok Sabha, was shot dead at her official residence by Rana to avenge the killings of 22 Rajputs by her in Dhemai in 1980s.
He was convicted on August 10 by a Patiala House court judge. The court, however, acquitted ten others accused in the case. One of the 12 accused has died during the trial.
